President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the ‘United Cities and Local Governments’assembly held in Daejeon on the 12th.
The United Cities and Local Governmentsis an international organization with local governments from 140 countries.The general meeting starts in Paris, France in 2004 and is held every three years in each country.
This is the first time that a Korean president has attended the United Cities and Local Governments.
At the meeting, President mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic, health, and climate change crisis facing the international community and stressed the importance of solidarity between local governments.
Presidentalso introduced one of the state affairs tasks, the ‘local era in which people enjoy fair opportunities wherever they live’ to participants in each country.
President explained that the local governments’ competitiveness is national competitiveness, explainingKorean example of holding a central regional cooperation meeting where central and local decision-makers gather.
President also asked participants to pay attention to the nation's local governments to play an important role in the international stage in the future, stressing that they will especially support the hosting of the 2030 Busan World Expo.
