The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the 2022 International Conference on UNESCO World Heritage Interpretation in Seoul on Dec. 8 in collaboration with the UNESCO Korean Committee.
Since 2016, Korea has held an annual international conference on world heritage interpretation to raise awareness and lead discussions on the field of world heritage interpretation.
Under the theme of "World Heritage Interpretation for Peace & Reconciliation," the meeting was held in a hybrid format with domestic and foreign experts in the field of World Heritage and diplomatic delegates of World Heritage Committee in Korea.
Participants agreed on the importance of world heritage interpretation in the future developmentof the World Heritage Convention, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.They discussed the principles of world heritage interpretation, including ▲building peace, ▲human rights-based approach, ▲respect for cultural diversity, ▲reflecting various voices,▲observing the principles of sustainable development.
Lee Kyung-ah, director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Public Culture, said in opening speech, "We will continue to contribute to the understanding and spread of world heritage interpretation through the World Heritage Center, a UNESCO Category 2 center established in Korea this year."
Lazare EloundouAssomo, director of UNESCO's World Heritage Center, thanked Korea for its contribution to the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, including the interpretation of World Heritage. He also evaluated that the interpretation of the heritage in an inclusive and fair manner is an important asset for world peace and reconciliation.
