The EU Commission expressed its opinion that Apple's installation of an Authenticator chip to limit the use of uncertified chargers violates the "EU Single Charger Directive."
The EU Commissioner for internal market recently expressed his position on Apple's iPhone 15 to be released this year, which is actually attempting to bypass the "EU Single Charger Guidelines" by installinga certification chip that restricts the use of accessories not certified by Apple.
The executive agency pointed out that the purpose of the "Single Charger Guidelines" is to ensure the interchangeability of all communication equipment and chargers regardless of brand. It is to enhance consumer benefits and reduce costs and waste.
The agency stressed that the directive prohibits any restrictions on the compatibility of all telecommunications equipment and chargers after 28 December 2024. The goods that do not meet single charger requirements cannot be released in the EU.
In particular, the Commission noted that it had clearly communicated to Apple in March that it was not allowed to restrict the compatibility of telecommunications equipment and chargers after the guidelines took effect.
Monitoring the implementation of these guidelines is carried out by the relevant authorities of the Member States, prohibiting the sale of products that violate the requirements and imposing sanctions on them.
The Commission will announce guidelines for the uniform application of EU regional guidelines around the third quarter of this year.
