In June 2025, the
LeadersTimes press group visited rural parts of Cambodia with aid and
resources. We went there to help the students who live in impoverished
circumstances. Even some of them did not have a phone, so we brought some
phones that were no longer in use but still working. Furthermore, we provided
some money to give away to them. Arriving in Cambodia, it was shocking how
different life was here, as there usually are lots of buildings near the
airport, but there was only grass, mountains, and some little houses. I felt I
had to help the students in reaching their goals.
When we went to
the church to provide support, the locals and kids prepared lots of dance for
us to welcome us. We also prepared several Korean traditional games and books,
which are written in both Korean and Cambodian. After dancing together and
learning the traditional dances, we gave them a book named ‘nombanjjog’ to read
together. Afterwards, we played ‘Yutnori,’ which is a traditional Korean game.
After playing a game and learning the rules, the children became excited to
compete and play with us. We also prepared origami to make a ‘Takji’ and play
with them. Finally, we played ‘Jegichagi’ with them, a Korean traditional
kick-up game. It was really hard for us, but they easily caught on. After
spending time and playing together, we gave them phones, money, and resources
before moving on to the next location.
When we arrived at
the second place, they welcomed us with the same dance, and we prayed and sang
together. I went to play ‘Jegichagi’ with kids, but almost no one played it
this time. Instead, they enjoyed drawing and playing with confetti. So I just
keep making ‘Takji’ and more origami. Finally, at the last place, there were
many more people than in the previous place, yet there was not much more room.
Once again, they danced and welcomed us, and we played traditional games and
bonded with the children.
I knew that
Cambodia does not live as well as other countries, but seeing the situation
firsthand helped us realize how significant our support really was. This
experience was one of the most impressive things, to be able to help someone
who lives far away in another country and support their educational
journey.
