The Overseas Consuls General Meeting in 2024 concluded with a final topic discussion on the morning of April 25th, centering on "Global Multilateral Diplomacy." The session saw the participation of Kang In-sun, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the consuls general. The discussion was structured into three parts, each addressing crucial aspects of international relations.
In the first segment, emphasis was placed on enhancing contributions to international peace and security by elevating democratic standards and engaging in activities within the UN Security Council. This included exploring avenues for expanding Korea's role in promoting global stability.
Vice Minister Kang, in her opening remarks, underscored the significance of Korea's multilateral diplomacy amidst geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts. She urged a thoughtful consideration of goals, stressing the consul general's crucial role in realizing Korea's ambition as a global pivotal state.
During the subsequent session, Kwon Ki-hwan, Director-General for Multilateral Diplomacy, highlighted Korea's commitment to strengthening international solidarity based on universal values like democracy and human rights. He outlined plans for Korea to play a more active role in global affairs during its upcoming term on the UN Security Council.
In the following segment, Kim Hee-sang, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy, outlined the government's vision on key global economic issues, including supply chains, digitalization, AI, climate, and energy. He discussed Korea's strategies for engagement within major multilateral economic forums such as the G7, G20, APEC, and OECD.
In the final session, Kwon Ki-hwan reiterated the importance of effective implementation of global South diplomacy by Korea through initiatives like advanced-country-type Official Development Assistance (ODA) and strengthening strategic partnerships with major donor countries.
The topic discussions served as a platform to share Korea's vision and contributions to the international community, gather insights from the consul general, and propose policies to bolster Korea's role as a "global pivotal state" in multilateral diplomacy.
